Voice of the People letter: Homeschooling holds its own as public schools struggle Posted: 23 Apr 2010 07:43 AM PDT By Jackson Citizen Patriot staffApril 23, 2010, 10:31AMGRASS LAKE — Two stories this week interested me: the unfortunate, yet apparently necessary, $8.3 million in cuts for the Jackson Public Schools and the very sad, yet apparently necessary, proposed bill in the Legislature to require schools to establish anti-bullying policies. What if a parent chooses to avoid worrying about all this by home educating? This alternative is becoming more popular. Interestingly, another story in the same newspaper highlighted the Ladies Legacy Golf Outing and its efforts to raise money for the Jackson Legacy scholarship program. This scholarship program, by the way, excludes homeschoolers. Why? Because homeschoolers aren't educating their kids as well as the public schools? — Pat Gallagher Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Posted: 23 Apr 2010 05:35 AM PDT The Estes Valley Public Library will sponsor a special Flamenco dance performance in celebration of El Dia de Los Ninos/El Dia de Los Libros in the elementary school gym on Wednesday, April 28, at 10:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Homeschooling families are also welcome to attend. Beginning in 1997, El Dia de Los Ninos/El Dia de Los Libros, or Children`s Day/Book Day is a day to celebrate the joys and wonders of childhood and the importance of books. It is also a celebration of the Hispanic culture. Artistic director of Fiesta Colorado, Jeanette Trujillo-Lucero, will captivate students and teachers through an interactive exploration of the Hispanic cultures that have influenced the Southwest. The diverse cultural richness of Spain, Mexico and Central America comes alive through this dance program. The recipient of the Governor`s Award, the Mayor`s Award for excellence, numerous awards from the Colorado Council on the Arts, the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, Hispanic Cultures of the Southwest and the Rocky Mountain News, Jeannette Trujillo-Lucero is the founder and artistic director of Fiesta Colorado Inc. and the Ballet Folklorico de Colorado.
