Brodie, a visiting professor of English at Washington and Lee University, recounts her own foray into home education in Love in a Time of Homeschooling: A Mother and Daughter's Uncommon Year. After watching her eldest daughter, Julia, become increasingly unhappy with the highly regimented public-school system, Brodie decided to take Julia's education into her own hands for a year, despite the skepticism of her husband, family, and friends. What transpired was a year filled with field trips and violin lessons, as well as arguments and frustration. Throughout the year Brodie became more critical of Virginia's Standards of Learning, but more important, the year was an education in itself. BRODIE READS AT 1 P.M.
