Mother takes photos in hopes of adopting Russian boy

Posted: 20 Aug 2010 04:41 PM PDT

Foreign adoptions can cost tens of thousands of dollars for families. One local mother has come up with a way of using Facebook and her talents as a photographer to make her family complete.

Elissa Peterson took a picture of 6-year old Max, a Russian orphan, when he visited Toledo this summer. This is max's story:

"He was with his father in the woods, in a little cabin in the woods until he was 4. His father was an alcoholic and not taking care of him. He was found outdoors by somebody hiking in the woods in a T-shirt only in the late fall," explained Elissa.

Max lives in a Russian orphanage. A local humanitarian organization, "Friends of Russian Orphans", hosted Max and a group of 10 other children last month. Peterson photographed Max with this hope: "What we wanted was to introduce him to a wealthy family who would fall in love with him and want to adopt him, but it turns out we were that family."

Instead, Elissa fell in love with Max. "He's for us, he's clearly for us," she says. The Peterson's decided to adopt Max, but they aren't a wealthy family. This homeschooling mom needs to find $35,000 to bring Max to the U.S. for good. That's where her photography comes in. In exchange for a $100 donation to her adoption fund, "What we can provide is 30 to 35 images on a CD and there's no photo rights taken so the CD is yours."

She's using social media to spread the word about what she calls "Bring Max Home - A Photography Fundraiser". "It's all spread by word of mouth. We do a lot on Facebook. We have a blog that you can follow our story," says Elissa.

So far she's raised $2,000 with photos for Max. "We have met a little boy that needs a family and he is very far away. He only wants to be loved. We're a family that doesn't have a lot of money, but we do have a lot of love."

The Peterson's hope their focus on this photography fundraiser puts Max in their picture by next year.
