Harrison Elementary teacher up for state honor

Posted: 20 Aug 2010 08:54 AM PDT

A Springfield Public Schools teacher was selected as one of six finalists for Missouri Teacher of the Year.

Abby Lowe, a kindergarten teacher at David Harrison Elementary, has been selected as a finalist for the Missouri Teacher of the Year.

She was among six finalists announced by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Lowe is the Springfield Public Schools 2010-11 Teacher of the Year, according to a news release.

Lowe, who is certified to teach birth through grade 3, received her master's degree in education in reading from Missouri State University in 2009.

She has also taught at Wanda Gray and Bissett elementary schools.

"Every morning I wake up and I think I've got to be the luckiest girl in the world," she said, praising students after being named the Springfield Teacher of the Year. "Every day that I work with them, they make me a better person."

The next step for the state Teacher of the Year finalists is an interview with the selection committee on Aug. 30.

All six finalists will be honored at a banquet in November where the winner will be announced.

The Missouri Teacher of the Year automatically becomes a candidate for National Teacher of the Year honors.
