An editorial on May 13 ("'Unschooling' is a lazy parent's idea of education") took to task a form of homeschooling that leaves it to children to educate themselves.

The story of Abe Lincoln schooling himself by the fireside is inspiring, but we do not think that the vast majority of children would — on their own — master the art of teaching themselves very much besides computer gamesmanship.

We also were critical of the Mississippi Legislature for permitting such lax parental behavior by being unwilling to properly regulate any form of homeschooling.

That riled homeschooling advocates, some of whom express their feelings in the letters to the editor printed below.

While we still firmly stand by our disdain of the unschooling movement, we have the greatest respect for parents who devote the time and effort needed to properly educate their children at home.

We would think such parents would be proud to have the state test their homeschooled children to verify the success of their efforts.

Because so long as the education of minors is a matter of public policy, its regulation is a proper function of state government, whether in a classroom or at a kitchen table.

3 students suspended after beating

" Sue Happy--do you really think that those parents have anything worth suing for? Kind of like getting blood from a turnip, isn't it? You can sue till the cows come home, if there is no assets you are wasting your time.

It seems that once a child is targeted for bullying, it just continues and continues. Holding the bullies back won't fix the problem. Put them through Juvie. Maybe alternative school? Kids that bully are unhappy kids. Maybe they and their families all need mandatory family counseling.

I am sorry for the victim. I was bullied by a boy in grade school, too. It's not much fun. "
