EMT is happy to be back from the flatlands

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 11:48 PM PDT

Lee Kelley, 21, was born in Verona at the old King's Daughters' Hospital. He lives in Staunton. He received his high school diploma after completing the homeschooling program taught by his mother who is a school teacher. He has a younger brother, Tommy, 19, and a sister, Meganne, 25, who is a nurse in Virginia Beach.

Kelley works full time at the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad as an Emergency Medical Technician. He has been with the squad since 2008 beginning as a volunteer technician in the emergency room at Augusta Health. He did his EMT basic training with the Air Land Emergency Resource Team in Big Sandy, Texas, where they specialize in worldwide natural disasters. He completed his intermediate training this summer with the Central Shenandoah Emergency Medical Services Council. Kelley had not planned to go into emergency services.

"I originally wanted to be a police officer and then just started doing this and enjoyed it," he said. And, the pay was better. When the squad gets an emergency alert from either the Emergency Communications Center in Verona or the Staunton Police Department they are required to be out within three minutes.

"We are usually out within the minute the call comes in," he said.

Kelley was happy to return to the Shenandoah Valley after his two-year sojourn in Texas. "I like the mountains and trees and the gorgeous scenery. It's definitely not Big Sandy, which was miles and miles of flat nothing," he said. He enjoys hiking and hunting.
