Student Journalists Break News Of Scam On Facebook

Club Promoter Posed As Student On The Website

(WCCO) Kassidy Kava's Facebook profile looked real enough, but it wasn't.

It said she was an 18-year-old from Rockford, Minn. and that she was a high school kid taking college classes at Normandale Community College.

But a couple months back, Kava started asking kids at Buffalo High School to be her Facebook friends.

Beth Leipholtz, an editor for The Hoofprint, the Buffalo high school newspaper, knew people who became Facebook friends with Kava.

"You'd just like see the school and see the mutual friends," she said. "A lot of people are just like, 'If all these people know her, then I must know her too, so I'm gonna add her,'" said Leipholtz.

Around 400 Buffalo students 'friended' Kassidy Kava.

"I'd heard everybody talking about it, and nobody knew who she was," said Leipholtz. "I personally didn't accept her friend request."

The mystery prompted one Buffalo student to start a Facebook page called, "Who the heck is Kassidy Kava?"

"This was right around prom season," said The Hoofprint adviser Ryan McCallum. "They thought it was a principal or a cop trying to bust parties around prom."

A second Facebook group formed. This one claimed Kassidy Kava was really an assistant principal. That group contained posts alternately criticizing and defending the administrator.

Nate Spanier writes for the school paper. He likes tracking down fake Facebook profiles.

He said, "What really made it suspicious is that there's almost 100 comments sitting on her wall saying, 'Who are you? I don't know you. You added me, but I don't know you who are.'"

With the help of the Buffalo Police department, Spanier determined Kassidy Kava doesn't exist. His discovery was the cover story in Thursday's issue.

Spanier found several Facebook profiles which sound and look like Kava.

"Kathleen Kava, right here, is just like Kassidy Kava. Same last name, they all start with Ks," he said. "There's also Katrina Kava, Karina Kava and Kayla Kava."

The profiles have other things in common -- birthdates, homeschooling and post-secondary classes.

Spanier figured out the Kava profiles were marketing ploys by Jonathan Anderson, owner of Synergy, a 16-plus dance club in Little Canada. It was a way to get the names and numbers of hundreds of kids.

The Hoofprint staff found Anderson had used fake profiles at other high schools in the metro area.

According to The Hoofprint staff, Anderson's club gave "Ultra VIP status" -- basically free pop and free entry -- to kids who shared their Facebook logins and passwords.

The newspaper staff and their advisor hope kids will be more careful now that they understand the lengths people will go to get their private information.

"The obvious lesson is be careful," McCallum said. "Understanding how valuable you are and your stuff is, and how hard people will work to influence you and to get into your world."

WCCO-TV left messages for Jonathan Anderson, but he didn't return our calls.
