Social held for homeschooling families (Melfort Journal) Posted: 02 Feb 2010 12:22 PM PST Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. Posted By Shelley TomlinsonUpdated 19 hours agoA special social evening was held for families in the area who homeschool their children on Saturday, Jan. 30. The social was held at Park Avenue Bible Church during the evening and about half a dozen families attended the event. Herb and Louise Wright were one set of parents that attended the event with their three children. There were many reasons that the couple decided to homeschool their children. "Part of it was geographic. We're at the very far end of the school division and it's a long bus ride," said Herb. Their children had attended Reynolds Central School but this is the third year they have homeschooled their children. The children used to have to catch the bus at 7:30 in the morning and now they get up at 7:30 and start school at 8:30. "I enjoyed the change of pace. We found that by the time they got home, we had to hurry and do homework, hurry and have dinner, hurry and get to bed. Then we had to do it all again the next day. I found that our family became much, much closer (after starting homeschooling)," said Louise. Alicia Summach also attended the event. She was homeschooled herself and plans to homeschool her own children. "I thought it was great. We got to study whatever we were very interested in. We got to read a lot. I got to learn things I wouldn't have been able to in school," said Summach. She has a brother who was interested in aviation so she also learned quite a bit about aviation which is something she doesn't think she would've had the opportunity to learn in a traditional school setting. Advertisement Summach thinks that homeschooling also helped prepare her for university. "I'm better at studying on my own and pacing myself and making sure I was ready for things than if I had gone to school because I was used to studying on my own. I was used to knowing how to look things up, knowing where to go to look things up, that sort of thing," she said. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
