TYLER - It's a years-old debate, and one not likely to be settled today. But the question remains... do religious references have a place in public school? And do students lose something when we take them out?

If you haven't thought about it, time is running out. Because in March, the State Board of Education will answer questions like these: Can we talk about the religious beliefs of our Founding Fathers... or mention them in social studies textbooks?

Dr. Alisa White is the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Texas at Tyler.

White says, "I think students are always shortchanged when we're afraid to talk about issues. But we have to talk about them in an intellectual way, as opposed to a way where I'm trying to persuade someone to adopt my point of view. There's really a difference."

She continues, "Also, it's important that we can talk about faith and religions particular in education, not just because of the historical aspect, but because of what's going on in the world today."

And it's not just textbooks. Stories like these are becoming all-the-more common. According to the Associated Press, in 2004 a 5-year-old Pennsylvania boy invited his mom to school for an "All about Me" show-and-tell project. But the school refused to let them share the boy's favorite Bible verses in his presentation— even though they did allow stories about Passover, Christmas and other religious holidays.

Religious freedom of expression is just one of the reasons Ali Dent has been homeschooling for 20 years. She can incorporate her beliefs, along with our nation's history of fath... into her teaching.

Dent says, "When I think of history, I think of it as a body of information… facts…and the way our country, if you're talking about American history… the way our country started… is very strongly linked to the Christian faith. Those are facts. They're not our opinions. So to take that out… my question for people who are taking it out, would by why? Why would you want to withhold part of the truth?"

At the same time, she says it may not be for everyone.

"It is a fact how the country was founded. It's a shame to not let children know that. But I don't know that, I mean, if God doesn't say we have to have that in our schools, I don't know that it would be right to press that on people. Personally, I want to be able to pray with my children. I have Christian schools that I can choose from and I have my home I can choose from."

Parents, if you feel strongly about these issues, now is the time to speak your mind. The State's curriculum decisions in March... could stick around for the next 10 years.
