Theresa Riggi: Schooling a 'flashpoint' in relationship Posted: 05 Aug 2010 05:14 PM PDT A FRIEND who met Theresa Riggi through a homeschooling group said last night that arguments over the children's education had been a major "flashpoint" in the Riggis' marriage. Amber Sebold, 27, from Peterhead, a mother-of-three, said the three children had come from "the most loving family home you could imagine". But Mrs Sebold said the one dispute that drove a wedge between the couple that she knew of was over the homeschooling of their three children. Mrs Sebold, who moved to Scotland from Missouri and whose husband Arron, 33, also works in the oil industry, said: "Obviously, Pasquale and Theresa had their issues and homeschooling was part of that but I tried to keep out of that. "I would have never in a million years thought she would have hurt them. "Her whole world revolved around them." Homeschool Options Include Hired Teachers Posted: 05 Aug 2010 02:30 PM PDT Homeschool is just one growing trend in U.S. education is the upscale version of homeschooling, where hired teachers do the schooling, a report says. It's a 21st-century throwback to the days when young aristocrats studied at home with a tutor or a governess. The New York Times reports that it can also be as expensive as paying tuition at an expensive private school. "It's a hidden group of folks, but it's growing enormously," Luis Huerta of Teachers College of Columbia University told the Times. Parents who turn to private tutors include those who travel a lot, sometimes moving between two or three homes during the year, and those with children already professionally involved in acting or other endeavors. Children with learning disabilities -- and rich parents -- may also benefit from a more personal education. Bob Harraka, president of California-based Professional Tutors of America, has about 6,000 teachers in 14 states available. He said that many of the inquiries he gets are too specialized, including regular requests for tutors to accompany families on long sailing trips.
