Jacob's Heart, a Freedom-based nonprofit serving families with children affected by cancer, took a somewhat unusual route recently to expand its Board of Directors: a newspaper advertisement. The response was excellent, according to Jacob's Heart Executive Director Dr. Susan Osorio, and the board now boasts 12 members with varied backgrounds and experience.

New members are Rose Arellano, branch manager of Bay Federal Credit Union; Judith Barbata, speech and language pathologist; Sheila Coonerty, clinical psychologist; Patricia Fink, retired Superior Court clerk; Juli Furtado of Santa Cruz Bicycles; and Allison Mendoz, an oncology nurse at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. They join the existing board members Melissa McDill, Gloria Vasquez, Carolyn Post, Lee May, Mary Boyd and Cory Kayser.
