| Posted: 16 Jul 2010 09:00 PM PDT Published: July 17, 2010 Hernando Today BROOKSVILLE - You won't find Ashlyn Bolton singing or acting on stage, but that doesn't stop her from making a place for herself in the limelight. The 13-year-old Brooksville resident would rather make her presence known gliding across the stage from one fluid ballet movement to the next or snapping out a jazz or tap-dancing routine. "It's making music with my feet," Bolton said. "The stage is my happy place." Whether it's dancing with Radio City Rockettes in New York City, performing in "Fame" in Tampa or on a cruise ship in Vermont, the teen has devoted much of her summer intensely training with dance professionals across the United States. Bolton was especially proud to be selected for the Rockette training beginning in June. Despite her being too young, camp officials made an exception due to her dancing skills. Bolton's mother Kim said the experience allowed her the opportunity to work intensely with not just the Rockettes, but with older girls from across the United States. Her training entailed practicing six hours a day for one week to learn three dance routines before performing in front of a large group with the Rockettes. As an added bonus, Kim said her daughter got to experience seeing New York City for the first time and, as luck would have it, be chosen from a crowd later to be a part of the Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular. "These are all things most young girls never get to experience," Kim said. "She not only gets to experience this level of training, but the thrill of New York City." Bolton said the recent training will act as stepping stones to meeting her dream of dancing professionally on Broadway, a dream her family shares. While homeschooled throughout the morning, Bolton spends the middle afternoons to evenings taking modern, tap and ballet classes 6-days a week at the Patel Conservatory, located at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa. Along with those classes, Kim said rehearsals for various musical performances, such as the Little Mermaid and Fame this spring added to her class load - resulting in mother and daughter not making it home until after 10 p.m. most nights. Kim added participating in multiple dance styles helped Bolton stand out during her auditions for the camps. Bolton began dancing at roughly 2 years old. Kim said her real training began at Center Stage in Brooksville where Kim said her teacher, Jayne Spradlin, not only got her started, but taught her through her own love of dance. "You have to love dance to really do it, and that's something that Jayne instilled in her students," Kim said. "But that's really where it all began." Bolton tried other interests also, such as gymnastics and soccer, but in the end decided dancing is what she wanted to do more than anything. With that, Kim said they had Bolton tryout at the Patel Conservatory, where the instructors there could help further her education. Bolton and her mother agreed they're not used to special attention after working with many other talented girls and professional teachers in Tampa. Her 5-year-old sister, Emma, is also following in Bolton's footsteps taking dance at the conservatory. Melissa Stafford, youth ballet principal and one of Bolton's instructors, said what makes Bolton successful is her drive and focus. Stafford added Bolton also goes the extra mile to be involved with teaching the younger students - assisting instructors in demonstrating movements and keeping students' attention. "That's one of the things that makes her unique among the student body is that most of them don't think to want to help teach," Stafford said. "We leave it up to the students to volunteer for that sort of thing. And she is very focused and hardworking, which is why she's so successful for someone who's only 13." When she isn't in dance classes or traveling between Tampa and Brooksville, she said she tries to spend quality time with her 16-year-old brother playing video games and her 5-year-old sister playing with dolls. She also takes piano lessons. Meanwhile, Kim and Ashlyn are preparing for the Vermont tap dancing studies before driving back and jumping into a two-week ballet intensive program. Kim said afterward, there's a small window of rest for Ashlyn - at least by not traveling as much - before her homeschooling begins again. "We've basically been flying by the seat of our pants all summer," Kim said. "Hopefully things will slow down a bit." However, Bolton said she wouldn't dream of slowing down for a second.
