COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A college president faces a homeschooling mother in a runoff to decide the Republican nominee to lead South Carolina's public schools.

Voters were choosing Tuesday between Newberry College president Mick Zais and businesswoman Elizabeth Moffly.

The winner will face Democrat Frank Holleman in November. He was deputy U.S. secretary of education under former President Bill Clinton.

Zais was the top vote getter in the six-way Republican primary. He had 26% of the vote, compared to Moffly's 19%.

Zais is a West Point graduate who took the helm of private Newberry College in 2000 after retiring from the U.S. Army. Moffly attended two colleges but did not graduate. She is co-owner of a construction firm and home-schooled her children.
