EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Home schooling is a topic that draws a lot of opinions but it is on the rise among parents who decide they prefer not to send their kids to a traditional school.

18-year-old Nathan Watson has never stepped foot in a public school. His parents, Barbara and Scott, homeschooled Nathan and their other children.

"I've loved every minute of it," Nathan said.

The Watsons and hundreds of others are attending this weekend's annual home school convention in Vanderburgh county. It's a place parents can go to find useful tools to help continue their child''s education. A growing number of families are opting to home school.

"There are good teachers out there who love their students and love what they do," said Scott Watson.  "But in our view, there's nobody that knows their student or loves their student better than we do."

"They know my strengths and my weaknesses," Nathan said.

States like Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois don't require parents to notify schools about the option to teach from home. For that reason, an exact number of home schoolers is tough to pinpoint. The U.S. Department of Education estimates home schooling has increased 7% for the past ten years.

The Watsons say it gives them flexibility to study as a family any time and move at their own pace. And they argue against the opinion that home schooled children lack social skills.

"We see it as one of the biggest benefits because our children can interact with adults or people their own age of younger because we interact in family settings," Barbara Watson told 14 News.

"I've done things with home school groups and I've been on the swim team for six years now," Nathan said.  "So,its never really been a problem for me."

The convention continues tomorrow at the Evansville Holiday Inn.
